Just a little over a week left now . . .
Believe it or not, I have been spending a ton of time in the Library lately with Lucy (being productive believe it or not!) and we decided that our "Saturday Night Reward" would be to have a low-key glass of wine and watch Matilda, because we had to get up early again on Sunday to continue "revision" (aka studying). Well, if you know anything about me or Lucy at all, you can imagine that what started out as an innocent, lame night, turned into going to Source, the on-campus bar.
And apparently they don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo in England, but thankfully they had a special on Corona's for the night. Coincidence?
As far as the Derby goes, luckily, Haley and Colton were thoughtful enought to skype me during the race and I was able to watch I'll Have Another take it all (and don't worry, I did, in his honor of the Kentucky Derby of course!)
A Friend of a Friend of a Friend ... (no, but really)
What a small world it continues to prove to be. Well, mom's best friends that she has known since college, Rose Schafer (and Mike too I guess.. =]) apparently had dinner with some of their neighbor's friends at Kelley's Island in Ohio a few summers ago turned out to be the Howe's, an adorable family from England. Who knew that a few short years later, I would be spending the day with them half way across the world? I'd never met any of them before, but went on Rose's word that I will "LOVE" them. So, after coordinating via Facebook (what a tool right?) I hopped on a train this morning and headed to Sheffield, England.
Turns out, she was right. They are literally the sweetest, most perfect little English family I've ever met! I met Sue and Molly at the Train Station, by merely going off of Facebook pictures (I sound like I was using a Dating Website here...) Good thing they were so adorable that they were hard to miss! After meeting Andy and Georrge, we headed to the Potting Shed Bistro where we had Fish and Chips for lunch!
Then we had a really relaxing afternoon in their adorable little English house in Penistone! Complete with a train track in their back yard and an American Flag out front! How sweet is that?
We headed over to the 'May Day' Gala later in the afternoon, desptie the cold, overcast weather. But hey, it's England, what more can you really expect?
This picture is of Molly and I. She is a real sweetheart (just like the rest of her family) and is in the process of deciding whether to stay in England for Uni next year, or to come to the University of Cincinatti to study in America. I think it's pretty safe to say that I hope she comes to Cinci, but we will just have to wait and see what she decides.
Either way, I'm gonna be seeing this girl in the States very soon =]
It was full of families gathering to say hello to one another since it was a Bank Holiday so everyone was off work. The directions to the location specifically said "on the cricket pitch." Classic.
No matter the temperature, you NEVER turn down home-made ice cream. Mine was Raspberry Ripple, made with real raspberries from the ladies garden. Haley - you would have been proud!
After being mis-navigated by the "sat-nav" (gps) and having to turn around on skinny little side roads behind houses, we made it to the pitch! Thank goodness for brilliant maneuvering skills by Sue and for English cars, especially Mini Coopers, being so darn small!
Thankfully, the rain held off and we were able to finish the day watching George, who is in the top right corner, play Cricket at the pitch in Huddersfield.
And finally, after Andy drove me back to Preston, I concluded my absolutely wonderful day with legitimate scones, jam, and cream with the girls in the flat, courtesy of the Howe family as yet another contribution to my becoming even more Proper English.
It's so good to know that there really are great people in the world, like the Howe's. They had absolutely no idea who I was or anything about me really, but yet, were willing to take an entire day to entertain me, show me around, and allow me to experience just a little bit more of England. So a big thank you, once again, to not only the entire Howe Family - Sue, Andy, Molly, and George - for welcoming me into their home for a day, but also to Rose and Mike for setting me up with such a sweet family!
